Patio Heater Types and Safety Tips
Extending Your Outdoor Season
A patio heater lets you use your outdoor space well into fall and early spring. Choosing the right type depends on your fuel access, space, and how often you'll use it.
Propane Patio Heaters
Freestanding mushroom-style heaters output 40,000-48,000 BTUs, warming a 15-20 foot radius. Portable — move them anywhere. A 20-lb propane tank lasts 8-10 hours. Cost: $150-$400 for the unit, $15-25 per tank refill.
Natural Gas Patio Heaters
Permanent installation connected to your home's gas line. Same heat output as propane but no tank swaps. Lower operating cost ($0.50-$1.00/hour vs. $2-$3/hour for propane). Requires professional installation.
Infrared Electric Heaters
Wall or ceiling-mounted. Heat objects directly (not the air), making them efficient in breezy conditions. Output: 1,500-3,000 watts. Silent, no emissions, instant heat. Cost: $100-$500, electricity $0.15-$0.30/hour.
Safety Clearances
- 36 inches clearance from combustible materials on all sides
- Never use propane heaters in enclosed spaces (garages, screened porches)
- Tip-over protection and flame failure devices are mandatory safety features
- Keep children and pets at least 3 feet from the heat source
