Patio Umbrella Sizes: Shade Coverage Calculator
Match Umbrella to Table Size
Your umbrella should extend 2 feet beyond the table edge on all sides. This ensures seated guests stay shaded even when the sun is at an angle.
- 30-inch bistro table (2 seats): 6 to 7-foot umbrella
- 48-inch round table (4 seats): 9-foot umbrella
- 60-inch rectangular table (6 seats): 10 to 11-foot umbrella
- 84-inch rectangular table (8 seats): 11 to 13-foot umbrella or two smaller umbrellas
Center Pole vs Cantilever
Center pole (market) umbrellas fit through a table hole and are more stable in wind. Cantilever (offset) umbrellas hang from a side pole, giving you unobstructed space under the canopy. Cantilevers cost 2 to 3 times more and need a weighted base (50+ pounds).
Fabric Quality
Sunbrella fabric (solution-dyed acrylic) lasts 5 to 10 years outdoors without fading. Polyester fades in 1 to 2 seasons. Olefin is a budget middle ground that lasts 2 to 3 years. Always choose vented tops — they let wind pass through and prevent the umbrella from becoming a sail.
Tilt Mechanism
As the sun moves, you need to tilt the umbrella. Auto-tilt (crank-operated) is the most convenient. Push-button tilt requires you to reach up and press a button on the pole. Manual tilt means adjusting the whole pole angle.
Base Weight Requirements
- 7-foot umbrella: 40-pound base minimum
- 9-foot umbrella: 50-pound base minimum
- 11-foot umbrella: 75-pound base minimum
- Cantilever: 150+ pounds or bolted to the deck
