Garage Shelving Systems: Which Is Best?
Three Main Types
- Wire shelving: $40-80/unit, 600-800 lb capacity, ventilated (good for damp garages), adjustable heights
- Wood (particle board): $30-60/unit, 400-600 lb capacity, cheapest option, susceptible to moisture
- Steel (welded): $80-150/unit, 1000-2500 lb capacity, most durable, heavy-duty storage
Choosing by Use Case
Light storage (seasonal decor, boxes): wire or wood. Heavy tools and equipment: steel. Damp/humid garages: wire (no moisture trapping) or powder-coated steel. Budget builds: wood shelves on 2x4 frames.
Installation Tips
Always anchor tall units (6+ feet) to wall studs with L-brackets. Garage floors are uneven—use shims under legs. Leave 18 inches from ceiling for fire sprinkler clearance if applicable.
