Mudroom Storage: Hooks, Bins & Bench Setup

The Mudroom Workflow

A functional mudroom handles the transition between outdoors and indoors. Every family member should be able to drop their coat, shoes, and bag in a designated spot within 10 seconds of entering the door. If the process takes longer, items end up on the floor.

Hook System

Double Hooks at Two Heights

Install a row of hooks at 60 inches (adult height) and another row at 36 inches (child height). Each person gets 2-3 hooks: one for a coat, one for a bag, one for a hat or scarf. Use heavy-duty hooks rated for 15+ lbs to handle loaded backpacks.

Cubby Alternative

If you prefer enclosed storage, open cubbies (12x12x15 inches each) hold folded jackets, hats, and gloves. Label each cubby with the family member's name. Cubbies look tidier than hooks but take more wall space.

Storage Bench

A bench 18 inches high provides a place to sit while putting on shoes. The space underneath holds shoe bins or cubbies. Choose a bench with a hinged lid for hidden storage of seasonal items like sunscreen and insect repellent.

Shoe Storage

Floor and Mat Strategy

Use durable, easy-clean flooring (tile, vinyl, or sealed concrete). Place a heavy-duty scraper mat outside the door and an absorbent mat inside. Shake or hose both mats weekly. This prevents 80% of outdoor dirt from entering the house.

Seasonal Rotation

Twice a year, swap the shoes and accessories in the mudroom. Winter boots and heavy coats move to the closet in spring; flip-flops and sun hats take their place. Store off-season items in labeled bins in the garage or attic.
