Under-Stair Storage Ideas That Work

By David Armstrong ·

The Underused Space

The area under a staircase is often wasted square footage — a closet that is hard to access or simply a dead corner. With the right approach, it can become one of the most functional storage areas in your home.

Pull-Out Drawers

Custom pull-out drawers built into the stair risers give you deep, accessible storage for shoes, bags, sports equipment, or seasonal decorations. Each drawer slides out independently, so you do not have to crawl into a dark closet to find things.

DIY Approach

If your stairs have open risers or a hollow structure, you can build simple plywood boxes on drawer slides. Measure each opening carefully — stair dimensions often vary from step to step.

Wine Storage

The space under stairs is naturally cool and dark, making it ideal for wine storage. Install angled wine racks that hold bottles horizontally. Add LED strip lighting for display and a glass rack on the underside of the stair for stemware.

Reading Nook or Office

If the space is tall enough (at least 48 inches at the highest point), fit a built-in bench with storage underneath and a small desk or bookshelf. Add a task light and an outlet for a cozy reading corner or compact workspace.

Coat and Entry Storage

For stairs near the front door, convert the under-stair space into a coat closet with hooks, a bench, and cubbies for bags and shoes. This creates a functional mudroom without taking up additional floor space.

Pantry Extension

If the stairs are near the kitchen, use the space as a pantry. Install pull-out shelves for canned goods, dry goods, and small appliances. The angled ceiling adds character and keeps items visible.
