Minimum Size Requirements

A functional walk-in closet needs at least 5 feet of width and 4 feet of depth. Anything smaller is essentially a reach-in closet with a door. For comfortable movement, aim for 6x8 feet or larger.

Single-Wall Layout (5x4 to 6x5 feet)

One wall of hanging rods and shelves, with the opposite wall left open for movement. Best for narrow closets. Use double hanging rods (upper at 80 inches, lower at 40 inches) to maximize vertical space.

Galley Layout (6x6 to 8x6 feet)

Storage on two parallel walls with a walkway in between. Keep the aisle at least 30 inches wide. One side for hanging clothes, the other for shelves and drawers. This is the most efficient layout for rectangular closets.

L-Shaped Layout (8x8+ feet)

Storage on two adjacent walls, leaving the corner and remaining walls open. Add a dresser or island in the open space. The corner can hold a rotating rack for accessories or shoes.

U-Shaped Layout (10x10+ feet)

Storage on three walls for maximum capacity. Reserve the fourth wall (near the entry) for a full-length mirror and bench. Include a center island with drawers if you have 4+ feet of open floor space.
