How to Style a Dining Room Buffet

By Maria Santos ·

The Buffet as Focal Point

A dining room buffet is both functional storage and display surface. Think of the wall above as a gallery and the surface as a stage.

Wall Art Above

Hang a single large piece (two-thirds the width of the buffet) or a gallery wall. Bottom of frame should be 6-8 inches above the surface.

Surface Layering (3 Zones)

Left Zone: Height

A tall vase, lamp, or stacked books with a decorative object. Creates visual interest from a distance. Height: 12-20 inches.

Center Zone: Function

Practical area: a tray for serving, fruit bowl, or bread basket. Between meals, a decorative bowl works.

Right Zone: Low Cluster

2-3 smaller objects at varying heights: candles, a small plant, decorative boxes.

Lighting

Table lamps on each end for warm ambiance. Or a picture light above artwork for drama.

Seasonal Refresh

Swap decorative objects every season. Keep functional pieces year-round and change accents.
