How to Choose the Right Rug Size
The Golden Rules of Rug Sizing
A rug that is too small makes a room feel disjointed. Too large overwhelms the space. The right rug anchors your furniture and defines the seating area.
Three Placement Options
1. All Legs On (Large Rooms)
All furniture legs on the rug. Creates a unified look. Requires 8x10 or 9x12 rug. Extend 6-12 inches beyond each piece.
2. Front Legs On (Most Versatile)
Only front legs on the rug. Works in medium rooms. A 5x7 or 6x9 usually works. Creates a cohesive look without the largest size.
3. No Legs On (Small Rooms)
Rug between furniture pieces as accent. Use with large sectionals or purely decorative setups. A 4x6 works here.
Room Size Guide
- Small room (10x12 ft): 5x7 or 6x9 rug
- Medium room (12x15 ft): 8x10 rug
- Large room (15x20+ ft): 9x12 or larger
Pro Tips
Leave 12-18 inches of bare floor between rug edge and walls. Use rugs to define zones in open plans.
