Living Room Rug Size: A Simple Calculator

By Nathan Brooks ·

The Most Common Mistake

Buying a rug that is too small. A tiny rug floating in the middle of the room makes the space feel disjointed and cheap. A properly sized rug anchors the furniture and defines the conversation area.

Three Placement Rules

All Legs On

Ideal for large rooms. All furniture legs sit on the rug. This requires a large rug (8x10 or 9x12 feet) but creates the most cohesive look.

Front Legs On

The most common and practical approach. The front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug, while the back legs are on the bare floor. This works with a medium-sized rug (5x8 or 6x9 feet) and still anchors the furniture grouping.

All Legs Off

The rug sits entirely under the coffee table, with no furniture legs touching it. This only works in very small rooms or as a layering technique over a larger neutral rug.

Border Rules

Leave at least 6 inches of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall (12-18 inches is better). The rug should extend at least 6 inches beyond each side of the sofa.

Shape Matching

Rectangular rooms get rectangular rugs. Round rugs work under round coffee tables or in square seating arrangements. Runners suit narrow galley-style living areas.
