Curtain Length and Hang Height Guide
The Height Illusion
Hang curtain rods 4–6 inches above the window frame—or at the ceiling line. This draws the eye up and makes ceilings appear taller. Most people mount too low, making rooms feel cramped.
Length Options
Floor-Length
Curtains should kiss the floor or pool 1–2 inches. Measure rod to floor minus 1/2 inch. Best for living rooms and bedrooms.
Above Floor
Hang 1/2 to 1 inch above the floor. Easier to vacuum under, no dust. Suits high-traffic family rooms.
Width Rule
Panels should be 1.5 to 2 times the window width for fullness. For a 48-inch window, use two 36–48 inch panels. Wider panels create luxurious folds and better light blocking.
Rod Extension
Extend the rod 4–10 inches beyond the window frame on each side. Curtains stack completely off the glass when open, maximizing natural light and making windows appear wider.
Fabric Choice
- Linen: relaxed, breathable, allows filtered light
- Velvet: formal, insulating, blocks light effectively
