Monitor Arms: Ergonomic Setup Guide
Why a Monitor Arm?
A monitor arm lifts your screen off the desk, freeing surface space and positioning the display at the perfect height and distance. It eliminates neck strain from looking down at a laptop or too-low monitor.
Types
Single Arm
Holds one monitor (up to 32 inches typically). Full range of motion: height, tilt, swivel, rotation. Cost: $40-$150.
Dual Arm
Holds two monitors side by side. Ideal for multitaskers and programmers. Cost: $80-$250.
Laptop Arm
Specialized tray for laptops. Raises the screen to eye level while keeping keyboard accessible. Cost: $40-$100.
Key Specifications
- Weight capacity: must exceed your monitor weight (check VESA mount)
- Height range: 8-20 inches of vertical adjustment
- Reach: 15-25 inches forward extension
- VESA compatibility: 75x75mm or 100x100mm standard
Mounting
Clamp mount attaches to desk edge (no drilling). Grommet mount goes through a desk hole (cleaner look). Both require a desk at least 1 inch thick and stable enough to support the arm and monitor weight.
