Dining Bench Seating: Pros and Cons
Advantages of Bench Seating
More Seating Capacity
A 72-inch bench seats 3 adults or 4 children—more than two individual chairs in the same space. This makes benches ideal for families with young children or anyone who regularly hosts larger groups.
Space Efficiency
Benches slide completely under the table when not in use, eliminating chair clearance space. This saves 6–12 inches of room depth compared to chairs. Critical for small dining rooms or eat-in kitchens.
Casual Aesthetic
Benches create a relaxed, communal feel. They suit farmhouse, rustic, Scandinavian, and modern casual styles. Mixing a bench on one side with chairs on the other adds asymmetry and visual interest.
Disadvantages
No Back Support
Most dining benches lack backs, making long meals less comfortable. For dinners lasting 2+ hours, guests on the bench may shift uncomfortably. Backed benches exist but cost significantly more and take more space.
Difficult to Exit
Anyone sitting in the middle of a bench must ask others to scoot or must climb over. This is inconvenient for frequent bathroom breaks or serving. Place the bench on the wall side where people get up less often.
Choosing a Bench

- Height: 18 inches (standard dining height)
- Width: 14–18 inches for comfortable seating depth
