Throw Pillow Arranging: A Simple Formula
The Pillow Formula
Professional designers use a simple formula: large + medium + small + accent. This creates visual hierarchy and prevents the flat, uniform look of identical pillows.
Sizing Guide
- Large (back): 22-24 inch squares — these are your anchors
- Medium (middle): 18-20 inch squares — the workhorses
- Small (front): 14-16 inch squares or lumbar shapes — the detail layer
- Accent: Bolsters, rounds, or unusual shapes — the personality piece
How Many Pillows?
- Standard sofa (3-seat): 3-5 pillows
- Sectional: 5-7 pillows (2-3 per section)
- Love seat: 2-3 pillows
- Accent chair: 1-2 pillows
The "karate chop" test: if you can't comfortably sit down without moving pillows, you have too many.
Color and Pattern Mixing
The 60-30-10 Rule
- 60% dominant color (usually a neutral — the large pillows)
- 30% secondary color (a pattern or complementary hue — medium pillows)
- 10% accent color (a pop of contrast — small or accent pillows)
Pattern Mixing Rules
- Mix scale: one large-scale pattern + one small-scale pattern + one solid
- Share a color: all patterns should share at least one color
- Vary the type: geometric + floral + stripe works better than two florals
Arrangement Techniques
Layered Corners
Place the largest pillow in the corner of the sofa, then layer a medium in front of it at a slight angle, then a small lumbar in front. Creates depth and a designed look.
Symmetrical Pairs
Two identical pillows at each end of the sofa with a single accent in the center. Clean and formal.
The Casual Scatter
Odd numbers (3 or 5) with varied sizes scattered without strict pattern. Looks effortless but requires careful color coordination.
Fill Matters
Down/feather fill: Luxurious, moldable, needs occasional fluffing. Best for a relaxed, lived-in look.
Polyester fill: Firm, holds shape, budget-friendly. Best for structured, crisp arrangements.
Down alternative: Middle ground — soft like down but hypoallergenic and cheaper.
Seasonal Refresh
Swap pillow covers (not inserts) seasonally. Linen and light colors in spring/summer; velvet, wool, and rich colors in fall/winter. One set of inserts, multiple covers = affordable year-round style.
