Outdoor Cushion Care: Make Them Last Longer
Why Outdoor Cushions Degrade
UV rays break down fabric fibers and fade colors. Moisture breeds mold and mildew. Temperature swings cause foam to compress and lose shape. Proper care addresses all three threats.
Weekly Maintenance
Brush off leaves, pollen, and debris with a soft brush. This prevents organic matter from decomposing on the fabric, which causes staining and mold growth.
Monthly Deep Clean
Solution-Dyed Acrylic (Sunbrella-type)
Mix 1/4 cup mild soap (Woolite or Dawn) per gallon of warm water. Scrub with a soft-bristle brush. Rinse thoroughly with a hose. Air dry completely before replacing on furniture.
Polyester Fabric
Same soap solution, but be gentler. Polyester is less UV-resistant and aggressive scrubbing can damage the coating. Never use bleach on polyester — it weakens the fibers.
Vinyl/PVC
Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soap. For stubborn stains, a 50/50 vinegar-water solution works well. Rinse and dry with a towel.
Mold and Mildew Removal
Mix 1 cup bleach + 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of water. Spray on affected areas, let sit 15 minutes, scrub gently, and rinse. For bleach-sensitive fabrics, use white vinegar instead (takes longer but is gentler).
Seasonal Storage
Store cushions indoors during off-seasons or prolonged rain. Use breathable storage bags (not plastic — trapped moisture causes mold). If indoor storage isn't possible, use waterproof cushion storage boxes with ventilation.
Fabric Protector Application
Apply a fabric protector spray (303 Fabric Guard or Scotchgard Outdoor) at the start of each season and after deep cleaning. This adds a water-repellent layer that makes spills bead up instead of soaking in.
Foam Care
Outdoor cushion foam is usually open-cell (drains water) or closed-cell (waterproof). Open-cell foam needs to dry completely after rain — stand cushions on their side to speed drainage. Closed-cell foam just needs surface drying.
When to Replace
- Fabric is thin and fraying (beyond repair)
- Foam no longer springs back when pressed
- Persistent mold that won't come out
- Fading so severe the pattern is unrecognizable
Quality outdoor cushions last 3-5 years with proper care. Budget cushions may need replacement every 1-2 seasons.
